Network Attached Storage that actually works? I don’t believe it.
Backing up your files as an editor is definitely something you need to think about – but is it something that you consistently do? I didn’t think so. Here’s a device that might make the process a little bit easier.

It’s the Iomega Ix2-200 NAS (that’s Network Attached Storage) and it will blow your mind. Ok, maybe not, but here’s what it can do for you:
Automated backup and restore including support for Apple’s Time Machine. It also offers a different backup scheme for PCs and Macs called Retrospect. With this type of backup support you can:
- Automate copy jobs to incrementally copy files off of network shares – in case you feel the need for redundant network storage.
- Raid 1 – this is the raid that mirrors your data across two hard drives. If one drive fails, you can rebuild your data based on the other hard drive.
- SMB features like email notifications, event logs and iSCSI (whatever that is?)
- Automated video surveillance with a compatable camera
- USB printer support
- Remote access
- Torrent downloading – if your into that kind of stuff. I’m not.
Oh yeah. All that and it works as a media server for your music and videos. According to Gizmodo, “The DLNA and iTunes streaming works in their respective clients, and Xbox 360/PS3 has no problem streaming files off of the server.”
The bottom line:
The price is definitely worth it – 1TB for $270, 2TB for $370 and 4TB for $700. The included feature set coupled with the low price makes this a very affordable backup solution for Final Cut Pro project files, Avid project files, graphics and anything else that you think you might want to hang on to for a while. If it’s raw video storage and backup you’re looking for then this isn’t for you. We’ll explore higher volume storage solutions in a later post.
