Documenting your own survival: Les “Survivorman” Stroud talks about staying alive and getting the shot
You may have heard of Les Stroud. He hosted the show Survivorman, where Les was the director, shooter, audio guy, sherpa and talent. Not ’cause he’s an egomaniac, but because he was literally the only person left to survive for 7 days on some “god forsaken” part of the planet. The challenges of shooting in such inhospitable environments are obvious. Recharging batteries, a constant endeavor. Broken gear, an inevitability. Les mentions how all of these strains have gotten even more complicated with the death of tape.
Go ahead and read this very interesting article from Gizmodo, where Les gives us insight into the production gear he’s using (Sony and GoPro), and the new challenges that face his latest show Beyond Survival.

I have been a huge fan of Les since Survivorman. I admire how much work is put into something that only shows for an hour on TV. The whole technology change in the past few years is mind blowing. I must admit that there is comfort in having a physical tape of your day’s work.
I totally agree Caitlin. Although I am a recent convert into the tapeless world, I love my stack of tapes.
