Codec Soup – Canon is making another video codec hooray!

Remember when everybody just used BetaSP?  I don’t.  Technically, I’m too young, but I fantasize about it everyday.  I realize that according to Bob Marley “Nothing can stop the times,” but I digress.

Canon has just announced a new codec they’ll be utilizing in some new camcorders coming soon.  Here’s the skinny.  It’s 4:2:2 color sampling.  It’s 50mbps, mpeg2 and it has an MXF2 wrapper on it.  iIt looks like it’s an HDV killer.  They say they are working with Apple, Avid and Adobe on full adoption.  Let’s hope so.

You beat me to this! Good job! I’m thinking that this might get adopted into the new line of HD SLR cameras hopefully. Either that, or they will be working on a way to add Canon lenses to some new video camera offering that will compete directly with RED’s Scarlet. At least I can hope, right?
