Celluloid Film RIP 1878-2010 – ARRI just nailed the coffin

Well it’s not dead yet really, but for all intensive purposes the death warrant is filled out just waiting to be notarized. You all knew this was a long time coming, but traditional 35mm film camera maker ARRI, just released a prototype of their latest digital motion picture camera “Alexa” and it’s the real deal.  Sure, us average Joe’s outside of Hollywood don’t have $50k lying around, so we’re probably not gonna play with one anytime soon, but eventually we will. A boy can dream.

They’re calling it the RED ONE killer. No they’re not, but I will just for sensationalism’s sake. It is true that the Alexa is here to compete directly with Red, and ARRI has such brand recognition that it should be taken seriously, which it apparently is by Red’s CEO Jim Jannard,

“We have believed, since IBC last year, that these two platforms would be the ones standing for the future. We are very proud to be in such good company. But for the moment, we tip our hats to Arri.”

At least we learned from Inglorious Basterds that celluloid film is great for starting fires though.
