Avid MC5 is exactly what we asked for
John and I just shot a private review of Avid’s latest Media Composer 5 software. They hope to release the product in June. It was abundantly clear that Avid has listened to it’s customers.
MC5 worked effortlessly with the Matrox MX02 mini, but perhaps the greatest change was what Avid learned from Apple. Avid implemented a set of tool bars which when activated can only be described as “making it drag and droppy like fcp.”
The good news is that Avid did it their way, with some improvements, and has the ability to turn it off, so that you can enjoy your Avid Classic setup.
We also saw how Avid will handle HDSLR files via the AMA. Very smooth. We”ll post the video shorlty. Stay tuned.

Seems like they are finally headed in a more modern direction with MC 5. The draggy – droppy doesn’t appeal to me, but the fact that I can turn it off makes it a win-win.
I’ve heard that the AMA support of H.264 and RED files are going to be the best workflow for dealing with those formats across all the systems.
And of course, the MX02 support is amazing. Its as if last year’s rudder hard-a-starboard is finally getting the titanic to head away from the iceberg.
Joe, MC5 is supposed to be a leap in speed too. Could you tell if it seems any faster? I know using the GPU overlay for fullscreen video really slows down my system. I hope using the MXO2 for monitoring will relieve the burden on my system.
I also heard Avid announced its intentions to buy Euphonix this week. Has anyone noticed that their stock pricing is soaring…
