Are indy films the only ones worth seeing? Electra Avellan sounds off.

Independent film grabs you by surprise, they take you out on a spin and twist you like a cinammon twist, says young film producer and actress Electra Avellan (Death Proof, Planet Terror, The Black Waters of Echo’s Pond). Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Electra has quite a history of acting and has been in the business since she was three years old. “At the time we were too young to understand the importance of what we were doing but as I grew up, I realized that entertainment was my life,” says Electra. She just finished working with Robert Rodriquez on his new movie Machete. Now she is getting ready for her big opening at the theaters this weekend on Friday April 9th, 2010, “The Black Waters of Echo’s Pond,” where she plays side by side with her identical twin sister Elise Avellan. It’s an original tale of mischief, pleasure, and carnal desire.

The Black Waters of Echo’s Pond

I had the pleasure of meeting Electra and the film makers of “BWOEP” at the Freak Show Horror Film Festival in October of 2009. At the festival, “BWOEP” took home the audience award, which to some is considered to be the most important. I was actually sitting next to the director, Gabriel Bologna, when they announced the audience award and was quite thrilled by it.

Without independent film we would be forced to watch movies like Transformers 3 or just watch another remake of an original Japanese horror movie. “There would be no good movies without independent film making,” Electra adds “you know you watched an independent movie when you walk out of the theater holding onto your heart, knowing that there was pain in the making of that film, and you love every bit of it.

“BWOEP” revolves around a game that arouses your dark secrets and brings them into the light. Of course, no one wants to hear the truth so carnage ensues. Then characters end up turning on each other, thanks to a certain mythical creature named Pan. Pan becomes the catalyst for change and that is why “pandemonium” ensues.

This horror flick has a lot of well done death scenes (death by rake was one of my favorites) and some serious sexual tension brought by the Avellan twins. What’s really scary about this movie is the thought that this evil lies in all of us and that it only takes a little nudge for us to turn our hearts black with greed and envy. Maybe I was star struck by Danielle Harris (Halloween 4 and 5) or the Avellan twins with their Venezuelan charm, but I really liked this movie. I am not saying this is the greatest the movie ever made by far. I just believe that there is a lot to be said about originality and story.

Advice from Hollywood

The most difficult part about producing is having to convince everyone that your project is worth their interest” says Electra who has worked with Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, she adds “I love a director who knows what he wants, who can work with the actors and communicate his vision. Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino and Gabriel Bologna are GREAT at that.

She believes that producing in Hollywood is one of the hardest, most corrupt, and exciting professions to experience. Her advice for anybody who wants to be a producer, “stay away from any addictive substances, go the the gym often, make love to your partner a lot, take vacations often.” When asked about current projects Electra was very secretive. The Avellan twins will be playing in Robert Rodriguez’s newest film Machette and told us “I can’t say anything about Machete. It’s all good secrets for now.

Black Waters of Echo’s Pond will be opening in 400 theaters on April 9th, 2010. To find a theater near you go to their website at www.theblackwaters.com and click on theaters and select your state.
